Sharma says more than 50% of all buildings worldwide are not seismically designed. Sharma explains that haunches act like a knee brace for the steel joints of buildings. These haunches can be installed on older buildings without needing to rebuild or close them down completely for refurbishment. Reinforcing older construction with haunches can protect a building from earthquakes for up to 100 years.

Media contact: Trevor Peters, peter237@purdue.edu

MORE: Recent AP video stories

The AP Newsroom (for AP members) and Purdue News YouTube channel (for all reporters) provide comments from Purdue experts on timely topics.

Watch them here

What you need for the perfect lawn this spring

Timing, tools and tips for a successful garden

                                    How do airplane toilets work?

About Purdue University

Purdue University is a public research university leading with excellence at scale.
