Amrine Distinguished Professor in the School of Industrial Engineering and the Mitchell E. What we need is infrastructural resilience and a system for fast and real-world engineering and industrial translation of innovations at scale,\u201d Malshe said. \u201cWhile the U.S. is starting to make notable moves toward building a robust supply chain, we need to be more focused and intentional about resilient manufacturing and operations for the present and future as a matter of national security. We\u2019re addressing that through the XMO initiative with a unified national message that \u2018we make, and we move.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To bring about that change, the co-chairs said the country needs to undergo a seismic shift in the manufacturing sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biller said the U.S. needs a manufacturing renaissance, adding, \u201cAt the same time we want to do it in a digitally enabled and sustainable way. The renaissance is quite critical for prosperity, for our ability to innovate and for our society. If you only design and then have other nations manufacture this, you\u2019re losing your ability to innovate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/malshe-manufacturingLO.jpg\" alt=\"A picture of Ajay Malshe.\" class=\"wp-image-1295\" style=\"width:400px\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/malshe-manufacturingLO.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/malshe-manufacturingLO-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/malshe-manufacturingLO-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ajay Malshe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Malshe, who is the inaugural director of the Manufacturing and Materials Research Laboratories, echoed Biller\u2019s sentiments and added the shift supports a key pillar for economic stability and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would like to go from \u2018designing in America and manufacturing elsewhere\u2019 to \u2018designing in America and manufacturing in America.\u2019 That\u2019s the renaissance I\u2019d like to see, and that\u2019s the renaissance we need to build resilience,\u201d Malshe added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The multidisciplinary scope of the co-chairs\u2019 research mirrors the junction of disciplines that govern advanced manufacturing and operations today, as it spans physical processes, digital transformation and sustainable production. \u201cThe collaborative multidisciplinary approach at Purdue mirrors the endeavors of large and small innovators; most innovation happens in the intersection of disciplines today,\u201d said Biller, who has 25 years of experience as a senior executive at companies including General Electric Co., General Motors Co. and IBM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would argue that there is probably no resiliency without sustainability, because you really have to ensure that you produce in a more environmentally friendly way,\u201d Biller said. \u201cIf you want the next-generation workforce interested in manufacturing, you better make sure that it\u2019s happening sustainably.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malshe and Biller said the initiative will be an instrument to foster nationwide collaborations from multiple academic disciplines that share a common bond to develop, educate and retrain the workforce in critical industrial sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biller said accelerating the adoption of innovative technologies and tools in advanced manufacturing, strengthening operations, and bolstering the supply chain must benefit not only large corporations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to build an advanced manufacturing operations innovation ecosystem that will allow us to help the small and medium-sized businesses that supply the original equipment manufacturers,\u201d Biller said. \u201cIf you want resilient supply chains and transparent supply chains, we need these small and medium manufacturers to transform in physical, digital and sustainable manufacturing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biller cited work underway at Purdue\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/business.purdue.edu\/centers\/dcmme\/?_gl=1*18mlyg2*_ga*MTQwNTk1NzYxNS4xNzE3MDc3NzMy*_ga_PF1CYQ27F6*MTcxNzE4MjQ3Ny4xMi4xLjE3MTcxODM1MDkuMC4wLjA.&amp;_ga=2.199961260.302180393.1717077732-1405957615.1717077732\">Dauch Center for the Management of Manufacturing Enterprises<\/a>, in which he serves as director, as the types of efforts to be supported by XMO PEI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn particular, it is contributing to Indiana\u2019s electric vehicle product commission initiatives, analyzing transformational risk and opportunities in both innovation and workforce development and helping with courses and conferences to educate the small and midsize enterprises in digital transformation,\u201d Biller said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malshe, who has more than 30 years of experience in industry and academia, said advanced manufacturing related to defense and in-space applications, agriculture and food security, transportation, and semiconductors is often not discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe new space age is upon us, and Space 2.0 will provide colossal returns for America\u2019s engineering and scientific sectors,\u201d said Malshe. \u201cToday, space commerce, security and exploration are getting seamlessly interconnected to Earth physically, digitally and sustainably.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conexus Indiana, a statewide organization that exists to promote Indiana\u2019s advanced manufacturing and logistics sector, hails Purdue\u2019s critical role in the transformation of industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWorking with Purdue University, we look forward to accomplishing digital transformation and workforce readiness at scale,\u201d Conexus Indiana president and CEO Fred Cartwright said. \u201cOur efforts in digital transformation and workforce readiness, through statewide programs such as Manufacturing Readiness Grants and Catapult Indiana, contribute to building resiliency in these critical sectors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with national alliances, within Purdue the PEI will foster academic alliances across campus with the Mitchell E.
