{"id":12802,"date":"2025-01-30T10:29:14","date_gmt":"2025-01-30T15:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=12802"},"modified":"2025-01-30T10:29:15","modified_gmt":"2025-01-30T15:29:15","slug":"purdue-created-gravi-bot-centrifuge-system-works-in-spaceflight-microgravity-and-zero-gravity-environments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/Q1\/purdue-created-gravi-bot-centrifuge-system-works-in-spaceflight-microgravity-and-zero-gravity-environments","title":{"rendered":"Purdue-created GRAVI-BOT centrifuge system works in spaceflight microgravity and zero-gravity environments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. \u2014 A researcher in Purdue University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/index.html\">College of Agriculture<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/Engr\">College of Engineering<\/a> has created and validated a patent-pending free-flying robotic centrifuge system for research and process applications in crewed spaceflight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system is called GRAVI-BOT, or GRAvity-Variable Instrument for Biological and Operational Tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1LuVC3qd_n8ns0CVAVcwdxOGIJppCSbCQ\/view\">A two-minute video<\/a> that shows GRAVI-BOT being used and highlights its features is online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/ABE\/people\/ptProfile?resource_id=7380\">D. Marshall Porterfield<\/a> and his team have applied compressed gas thrusters to propel and drive constant rotational acceleration to provide torque to the centrifuge\u2019s central rotational axis. Porterfield is a professor in the departments of <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/ABE\">agricultural and biological engineering<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/department\/hla\/index.html\">horticulture and landscape architecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe system has applications providing important gravitational controls for biomedical and biotechnology research,\u201d he said. \u201cIt also has applications for any material or fluid mass separations requiring mechanical centrifugation in spaceflight microgravity and zero-gravity environments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system includes positioning sensors that allow users to adjust the thrusters to position the centrifuge to designated locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur low-mass centrifuge system lacks a motor, a rotor and stators for electromagnetic rotation,\u201d Porterfield said. \u201cInstead, it utilizes a small onboard air compressor feeding the PET (polyethylene terephthalate) compressed air tank. The system also is portable, foldable and inflatable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Porterfield and his team have validated the system and disclosed it to the <a href=\"https:\/\/purdueinnovates.org\/otc\/\">Purdue Innovates Office of Technology Commercialization<\/a>, which has applied for a patent to protect the intellectual property.
