{"id":12005,"date":"2024-12-16T08:36:36","date_gmt":"2024-12-16T13:36:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=12005"},"modified":"2024-12-16T08:36:38","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T13:36:38","slug":"purdue-safe-rwsl-surveillance-system-built-to-prevent-airport-runway-incursions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/Q4\/purdue-safe-rwsl-surveillance-system-built-to-prevent-airport-runway-incursions","title":{"rendered":"Purdue SAFE-RWSL surveillance system built to prevent airport runway incursions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. \u2014 Researchers in the <a href=\"https:\/\/polytechnic.purdue.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Purdue Polytechnic Institute<\/a> have developed a patent-pending, economically viable, simplified light system to automatically indicate an airport runway\u2019s status to pilots, pedestrians and vehicle operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The solar-powered system is called Simple, Affordable, Flexible and Expandable Runway Status Lights, or SAFE-RWSL. It uses automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) data and computer vision to activate runway lights in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/polytechnic.purdue.edu\/profile\/jhmott\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Mott<\/a> is a professor and Luigi Dy is a doctoral student in Purdue University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/polytechnic.purdue.edu\/schools\/aviation-and-transportation-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Aviation and Transportation Technology<\/a>. They developed SAFE-RWSL and disclosed it to the <a href=\"https:\/\/purdueinnovates.org\/otc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Purdue Innovates Office of Technology Commercialization<\/a>, which has applied for a patent to protect the intellectual property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research will be presented Jan. 8 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/trb-annual-meeting.nationalacademies.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2025 Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting<\/a> in Washington, D.C., during a session titled \u201cManaging the Safety Impact of Transformational Changes on Aviation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GQ8jyicbf_o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">six-minute presentation about SAFE-RWSL in its earliest prototype form<\/a> is available on Dy\u2019s YouTube channel. <a href=\"https:\/\/hammer.purdue.edu\/articles\/thesis\/Assessing_the_Effectiveness_of_Simplified_Runway_Status_Lights\/27873300\/1?file=50690847\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">His dissertation that covers the human-factor issues related to the effectiveness of SAFE-RWSL<\/a> is published online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBased on the performed study, the use of simplified runway status lights is expected to be effective at reducing runway incursion risk in nontowered, no-traffic environments when a conflicting aircraft is difficult to see,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Industry partners interested in developing or commercializing SAFE-RWSL should contact Matt Halladay, senior business development manager and licensing manager \u2014 physical sciences, at <a href=\"mailto:mrhalladay@prf.org\">mrhalladay@prf.org<\/a> about track code <a href=\"https:\/\/inventions.prf.org\/innovation.html?InventionID=8633\">70016<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Limitations of traditional runway surveillance systems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Radar-based detection systems are the current standard to prevent runway incursions. The cost usually limits their use to larger airports; the current baseline system costs tens of millions of dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSmall airports generally rely on simple \u2018see-and-avoid\u2019 procedures or, in limited cases, air traffic controllers to prevent these incursions,\u201d Mott said. \u201cWithout a comprehensive approach that incorporates technology, however, even the most vigilant pilots and air traffic controllers, if available, can\u2019t prevent all potential accidents resulting from encroachments on an active runway by pedestrians, ground vehicles or other aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Current systems used for runway surveillance also can be complex to implement. (Purdue University photo\/Luigi Dy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Testing and next development steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prototype SAFE-RWSL system has been tested at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/airport\/\">Purdue University Airport<\/a>, the country\u2019s first university-owned airport. It serves commercial airline passengers, passenger and cargo charters, and military operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To evaluate the effectiveness of the SAFE-RWSL\u2019s ADS-B component, Mott and Dy observed 123 aircraft operations and compared them to detections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe system accurately detected 94% of aircraft, including all operations involving ADS-B-transmitting aircraft. It also sufficiently provided timely runway status information despite being in airspace where ADS-B is not required,\u201d Dy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To train, develop and evaluate the effectiveness of the SAFE-RWSL\u2019s computer vision component, Mott and Dy utilized a sample of recorded images of aircraft operations. Based on almost 3,400 seconds of ground operations, the system accurately detected 94% of operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUsing object detection and filtering algorithms, the computer vision software designed to run on solar-powered modules was able to detect 110 out of 110 approaching aircraft, while providing sufficient time to indicate potential traffic conflicts,\u201d Dy said. \u201cOur next step to develop the computer vision subsystem of SAFE-RWSL is to conduct live tests of aircraft on runways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mott and Dy have also conducted economic feasibility projections on the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe estimate a production SAFE-RWSL system to cost no more than an order of magnitude less than existing systems, enabling it to be applicable to more airports than existing systems,\u201d Dy said. \u201cInitial projections showed an expected 10-year benefit-to-cost ratio of 2.37.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mott and Dy are developing a second-generation prototype to demonstrate to stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe hope to get further funding from interested parties to continue to improve and test the system in different environments,\u201d Dy said. \u201cWe hope that the system will eventually be accepted by the Federal Aviation Administration as a solution for runway incursion mitigation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mott, Dy and McClane Rush, an alumna who earned her master\u2019s at Purdue in 2022, won the 2021-22 University Design Competition of the Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP), a program of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
