{"id":11742,"date":"2024-12-10T09:24:07","date_gmt":"2024-12-10T14:24:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=11742"},"modified":"2024-12-10T09:24:10","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T14:24:10","slug":"purdue-iu-researchers-to-use-1-5-million-grant-to-test-patent-pending-autonomic-dysreflexia-monitoring-device","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/Q4\/purdue-iu-researchers-to-use-1-5-million-grant-to-test-patent-pending-autonomic-dysreflexia-monitoring-device","title":{"rendered":"Purdue, IU researchers to use $1.5 million grant to test patent-pending autonomic dysreflexia monitoring device"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. \u2014 A Purdue University researcher in the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/Engr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">College of Engineering<\/a> and his collaborators in the <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.iu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indiana University School of Medicine<\/a> have received federal funding to develop their patent-pending, noninvasive device that continuously monitors for autonomic dysreflexia, or AD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AD is a life-threatening condition that usually develops after a spinal cord injury at or above the T6 vertebra. <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24378-autonomic-dysreflexia-ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the Cleveland Clinic<\/a>, around 17,000 Americans each year experience a spinal cord injury. Up to 70% of people with a spinal cord injury above the T6 vertebra develop AD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense\u2019s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) will advance testing the device in human participants with spinal cord injuries who experience AD. In tests of rodents with spinal cord injuries, the system rapidly detected AD with 93.4% accuracy. In tests of humans with chronic spinal cord injuries, AD was confirmed with 94.1% accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/Engr\/People\/ptProfile?resource_id=69128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bradley Duerstock<\/a>, professor of practice in the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/IE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edwardson School of Industrial Engineering<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/BME\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering<\/a>, has collaborated on the device with IU School of Medicine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.iu.edu\/faculty\/4919\/everett-thomas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thomas Everett<\/a>, associate professor of medicine and investigator in the school\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.iu.edu\/research-centers\/cardiovascular\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Krannert Cardiovascular Research Center<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.iu.edu\/faculty\/16380\/mellon-matthew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Matthew Mellon<\/a>, associate professor of urology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research has been published in the peer-reviewed journals <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/milmed\/article\/188\/Supplement_6\/474\/7388273#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Military Medicine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fninf.2022.901428\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Frontiers in Neuroinformatics<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32082953\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IEEE Journal of Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine<\/a>, Neurotrauma Reports, and Scientific Reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duerstock disclosed the AD monitoring device to the <a href=\"https:\/\/purdueinnovates.org\/otc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Purdue Innovates Office of Technology Commercialization<\/a>, which has applied for a patent to protect the intellectual property. Industry partners interested in further developing the innovation should contact Patrick Finnerty, senior business development and licensing manager \u2014 life sciences, at <a href=\"mailto:pwfinnerty@prf.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pwfinnerty@prf.org<\/a>, about track code <a href=\"https:\/\/inventions.prf.org\/innovation.html?InventionID=8137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">69526<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The device, the grant and clinical testing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medical professionals traditionally use blood pressure monitoring to diagnose AD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis method is impractical for continuous monitoring because it restricts a person\u2019s activities and can be affected by movements like propelling a wheelchair or transferring into or out of one,\u201d Duerstock said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The noninvasive device developed by Duerstock, Everett and Mellon detects AD using sensors and controllers. It measures the heart\u2019s electrical activity, skin nerve activity, galvanic skin response and skin temperature. It can be integrated onto a wearable device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe device extracts features from the measurements and classifies them to identify the onset of AD using a machine learning model,\u201d Duerstock said. \u201cUpon detecting AD, the device notifies the subject and their caregiver or medical professional.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The $1.5 million award is the second that the researchers have received through the CDMRP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe had developed our prototype device using rodent studies and current preclinical testing in human participants at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis,\u201d Duerstock said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mellon said, \u201cThis second grant allows us to expand our trials to home testing and offer this resource to individuals who may have mobility and transportation challenges that limit access to medical services.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Questions about participating in the clinical tests of the wearable device for everyday use can be addressed to Duerstock at <a href=\"mailto:bsd@purdue.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bsd@purdue.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About autonomic dysreflexia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the body senses a painful or stressful stimulus below the level of a spinal cord injury, it may trigger AD, although this stimulus may not be felt by the individual. During AD, the body responds by constricting the blood vessels in the lower part of the body, causing a rapid increase in blood pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK482434\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AD episodes increase the risk of stroke by 300%-400%<\/a> and can occur up to 40 times per day. Patients and their caregivers manage most episodes by themselves by finding and mitigating the source of the noxious stimulus.
