What Does It Mean?\u201d is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, in Stewart Center\u2019s Loeb Playhouse. The event is being moved from Fowler Hall to the larger Loeb Playhouse because of strong interest. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/president\/lecture-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Presidential Lecture<\/a> is free and open to the public, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/am.ticketmaster.com\/purdue\/buy\/ism\/UExTMTAzMEw=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">general admission ticket<\/a> is required. The community of scholars at Purdue looks forward to an engaging conversation with Professor Wilczek on our campus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilczek is actually returning to Purdue. He delivered a talk titled \u201cQuantum Beauty\u201d in October 2012 as part of the university\u2019s Hubert M. It was very difficult to reconcile that behavior with basic principles of quantum mechanics and relativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doing so led Wilczek, then a 21-year-old Princeton University graduate student working with Gross, to propose a complete mathematical theory of the strong force, known as quantum chromodynamics, that has proved brilliantly successful. QCD is now central to experimental work at modern particle accelerators, and to early universe cosmology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In announcing the prize 20 years ago this month, the Nobel academy noted that Gross, Politzer and Wilczek \u201cbrought physics one step closer to fulfilling a grand dream, to formulate a unified theory comprising gravity as well \u2014 a theory for everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilczek also has made many other seminal contributions to fundamental particle physics, cosmology and the physics of materials. His current theoretical research includes work on axions, anyons and time crystals. These are concepts in physics which he named and pioneered. Each has become a major focus of research worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has authored several well-known books and a monthly \u201cWilczek\u2019s Universe\u201d feature for The Wall Street Journal. His recent book, \u201cFundamentals: Ten Keys to Reality,\u201d distills the most profound and mind-expanding insights of modern science and explores their implications for questions that are usually considered philosophical or even theological.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently he is writing \u201cFutures,\u201d which he describes as an exploration of what is, what could be and what should be in the light of modern science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born in Queens, New York, Wilczek received a bachelor\u2019s degree from the University of Chicago in 1970 and a PhD in physics from Princeton in 1974, teaching there from 1974-81.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Presidential Lecture Series<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Launched in 2014 by then-Purdue President Mitch Daniels and continued by President Mung Chiang, the Presidential Lecture Series exposes Purdue students and the broader community to inspiring ideas, courageous leadership and models of civic engagement and civil discourse.
