A Big Ten experience with a culture of warmth and support — that’s my giant leap

Blake Johnson knew he wanted the opportunities that come with a Big Ten education, but felt a bit nervous about getting lost in the numbers.

“It was somewhat overwhelming, socially. The jump in the number of people was daunting at first,” he says.

But the concern turned out to be short-lived, especially because of living in the residence halls. “Living on campus allowed me to make even more friends and adjust to life at the University. It’s been, by far, one of the best experiences and a place where I really fit in.”

Blake believes this was an authentic continuation of the culture he witnessed as a visitor, and it carried over to his academic experience as well. “Every time I stepped foot on Purdue’s campus as a guest and as a student, I felt welcomed, whether it was the student ambassadors and tour guides or simply talking to fellow students and TAs during my first semester.”

And he’s decided to share his pride in his college to encourage students who are where he was just a few years ago. “Everyone wants to spread the love that they have for their school in any way they can,” he says. “This is the primary reason I became a College of Science Ambassador myself last year.”
