Meet Nick Rosenorn

Nicholas Rosenorn

Major: Statistics and economics

Year: Sophomore

Hometown: Des Plaines, IL

Why your major?

I was always interested in mathematics and science, but I wasn’t too intrigued by engineering. I took Advanced Placement statistics in high school and loved it.

What does the Data Mine Learning Community mean to you?

I joined it really just more for the knowledge than for the experience, but it’s turned into something where a lot of my close friends are from this group.

What’s it like to be in a learning community?

It turns into literally the name of it, a learning community where you’re learning a bunch but you’re also part of a tight-knit community. You can focus on what you’re interested in while also living in a low-stress environment.

A time you were glad you stepped out of your comfort zone?

There was the “DataFest” last semester. My two roommates and I decided to enter without any real expectations. Our goal was to measure fatigue levels of the Canadian women’s rugby team to see why some players feel more tired than others. We got an honorable mention at the end.

Proudest moment at Purdue?

My first semester freshmen year I was enrolled in an honors calculus course, and I failed the first quiz. I got a five out of 10 and I freaked out and called my mom. It was my first university grade. But eventually, I adjusted and ended up with an A in the class. My proud moment wasn’t the grade, but I’m a big proponent of the learning experience and going through the process.

If you had 21 hours to spend on the moon, how would you spend it?

I’ve never wanted to go to the moon, but I guess if I had to then I’d spend the first hour jumping around. I’d go back in my spaceship and drink juice or something to replenish myself. Then, I’d probably go collect stuff. Or maybe I’d fly my spaceship to the dark side of the moon.

My small step in ____ at Purdue will help me achieve my giant leap of ____.

My small step in Data Mine as a statistics student at Purdue will help me achieve my giant leap of being a future industry leader.
