Police: Road, parking disruptions as Purdue Half Marathon takes place Saturday (Oct. 22)

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University police are informing motorists of anticipated campus traffic and parking disruptions on Saturday (Oct. 22) morning due to the Purdue Boilermaker Half Marathon.

In past years, the event has drawn around 2,500 participants to compete in either a 5K or a half marathon. The half marathon begins at 8 a.m. and the 5K at 8:35 a.m. at the intersection of Cherry Lane and Steven Beering Drive. The event is expected to last until around noon.

"It's going to be a busy day on campus," said Nick Crosby, lieutenant of administrative services. "So, while our main objective is to protect everyone, we want to accommodate motorists the best we can. We just ask that people follow the directions of the police officers who will be stationed at various intersections and be aware of what's going on around them."

All of the event will be in West Lafayette this year, and most of it will take place on existing exercise trails, Crosby said. This means the only streets affected at various points during the half marathon will be Cherry Lane, both during the beginning and end of the event; McCormick Road; and Airport Road. Event participants also will be on exercise trails near Stadium Avenue, State Street, U.S. 231, Cumberland Avenue, Northwestern Avenue and Lindberg Road.

For the 5K portion, Tower Drive, Martin Jischke Drive and Third Street will be affected.

Crosby said roads will reopen immediately after runners clear them.
