Purdue’s speech and language clinic offering free virtual screenings

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. —A clinic in Purdue University’s College of Health and Human Sciences is offering free speech and language virtual screenings for a limited time.

The M.D. Steer Speech and Language Clinic in Purdue’s Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences is offering two different telepractice services. One is for children ages 18 months to 5 years, and the other is for adults who are experiencing communication difficulties, memory or cognitive changes, or changes in voice or swallowing. In the virtual screening for children, the clinicians can address questions about the child’s speech and language development and ability to understand or be understood.

The free screenings are available as a resource to help the community during COVID-19, and will be conducted by licensed, certified speech-language pathologists along with one to two graduate students. Participants will need a computer, laptop, or tablet with an internet connection.

The children’s screening will last approximately 30 minutes, and the initial adult appointments will last approximately 30 minutes to one hour. Recommendations for additional treatment or services will be provided upon the completion of the screening.

To sign up for a virtual screening, contact Melissa Ridgley at 765-494-3789 or mridgley@purdue.edu or Amanda Warmbold at 765-494-4229 or awarmbol@purdue.edu. They also can answer any questions about the services.
