Purdue Galleries to present Creative Muses: Art + Fashion

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue Galleries has partnered with Purdue Theatre to present “Creative Muses: Art + Fashion,” an exhibition that draws from Purdue Galleries’ permanent collection and Purdue Theatre’s Special Collection of Historic Dress. “Creative Muses” will be on display in the Robert L. Ringel Gallery in Stewart Center, opening Monday (Jan. 13) and running through Feb. 15. A reception and curator’s talk will be hosted in the gallery at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 23.

Throughout history, art and fashion have been intertwined. Both are influenced by each other, politics, social change and new discoveries. Featuring pieces from the Purdue Theatre’s Department Special Collection of Historic Dress and the Purdue Galleries permanent collection, this exhibition explores the deep relationship between the two and asks the visitor to question, “What is art?”

“Creative Muses” will include pieces by William Hogarth, Coco Chanel, James Abbott Whistler, Elsa Schiaparelli, Rockwell Kent, Escada, and Salvador Dali. The themes and relationships highlighted include history of haute couture, political influences, cultural appropriation and artistic collaboration.

Ringel Gallery is located in Stewart Center, 128 Memorial Mall, West Lafayette, and is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday. All Purdue Galleries exhibits and events are free and open to the public. For class and group visits, contact Erika Kvam at Purdue Galleries at 765-494-3061.
