Appointments, honors and activities

Appointments and promotions:

- Mung Chiang, the John A. Edwardson Dean of the College of Engineering, has been named to the steering committee of the newly expanded Industrial Internet Consortium, which is now one of the world’s largest technology industry organizations and leading the global drive to realize the full promise of the Internet of Things. The IIC reported the election of Chiang and Ron Zahavi, chief strategist for IoT standards at Microsoft, in connection with announcing that it has combined with the OpenFog Consortium, which Chiang co-founded in 2015, blending the two influential international consortia in IoT. The shared goal is to transform business and society by accelerating the momentum of the industrial IoT, including developing and promoting industry guidance and best practices for fog and edge computing. Chiang is the only university member in the 10-member board of the new IIC. A full release is available here.

Notables:

- Purdue Promise received several awards from the Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NAPSA). The program received an Excellence Award from in the category of Enrollment Management, Financial Aid, Orientation, Parents, Persistence, First-year, Other-year, and related. The program received Grand Gold in their award category, which is the highest award though NAPSA. An Outstanding Professional Award, in the category of Socioeconomic and Class Issues in Higher Education Knowledge Community, was awarded to Jess Ramsey, assistant director for Purdue Promise. The award for Best Practices in International Education was also awarded to Purdue Promise, in the category of Study Abroad Programming, by the NASPA International Education Knowledge Community.

Alumni honors:

- Purdue Theatre alumnus Eileen Smitheimer (’84) will receive the 2019 Distinguished Achievement Award in Sound Design and Technology from the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. Smitheimer is a theater professional and educator focusing on sound and lighting design. She has been designing for more than 30 years across the United States and Europe. Currently, she is an associate professor in University of Delaware’s Department of Theatre, as well as resident sound designer and sound supervisor for the Resident Ensemble Players, the university’s professional theatre company. Student honors:

- Purdue seniors Hannah Ferrill and Jack Judge won first and third place in the International Housewares Association Student Design Competition. Ferrill won $2,500 and Judge won $1,750, while both received an all-expense paid trip to the International Home and Housewares Show in Chicago in March. The students will attempt to license their designs to housewares manufacturers during the show.
