Trustees approve biennial budget requests

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. —Purdue Trustees on Friday (Aug. 3) approved the 2019-21 legislative request for its line-item appropriations.

Purdue is requesting funding for six line items totaling $31.2 million for fiscal year 2019-20 and $32 million for fiscal year 2020-21, said Chris Ruhl, senior vice president for strategic initiatives. The university’s operating appropriation for the upcoming biennium is determined by the state based on performance funding metrics prescribed by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. Actual operating appropriations will not be known until the legislative session has been completed.

The university's legislative request will be submitted to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education in September. After review, ICHE will then make its recommendation on the request to the General Assembly for consideration during its legislative session.

Included in the university’s line item requests is funding for:

* Agriculture Extension Crossroads, inclusive of salary and fringe benefit increases and repair and rehabilitation funding.

* County Agricultural Extension educators, inclusive of salary and fringe benefit increases.

* Purdue Polytechnic Statewide, inclusive of salary and fringe benefit increases.

* The Center for Paralysis Research, inclusive of salary and fringe benefit increases.

* Technical Assistance Program (TAP) and Indiana Next Generation Manufacturing Competitiveness Center (IN-MaC), which provide statewide resources to assist Hoosier businesses and industry partners remain globally competitive and to enhance capital investment and job creation and retention in Indiana.

* Purdue Fort Wayne programmatic areas: Materials, Biomaterials and Bioengineering; Data Science, Applied Statistics and Computer Information Systems; and Strategic and Risk Management, Financial Services and Financial Information Systems.

The university also requests $4.1 million in 2019-20, inclusive of $175,000 for new equipment, and $4 million in 2020-21 for the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, a request previously approved by the State Board of Animal Health, under whose auspices the university manages and operates the ADDL.
