SIPAC Field Day will focus on forage management, invasive species and more
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Extension will host a field day at the Southern Indiana Purdue Agricultural Center (SIPAC) on Sept. 8. Field days are educational opportunities offered throughout the summer by Purdue Agricultural Centers (PACS) and Purdue Extension. These events provide information about crop production, farm management and land use.
The SIPAC Field Day will focus on such topics as native warm season grasses for wildlife, forage management techniques, invasive species control in woodlots and evaluating and managing body condition scores of beef cattle. Jason Tower, SIPAC superintendent, and Nick Minton, Purdue beef systems specialist, will offer a demonstration of how to utilize a bud box, a herding system designed to facilitate better flow and easier handling of cattle. The event will be divided into two sessions; the early-afternoon session from 1-3:30 p.m. and a late-afternoon session from 4-8:30 p.m. Supper will be provided during the late afternoon session for those that RSVP.
SIPAC is located in Dubois County close to the Patoka Reservoir at 11371 East Purdue Farm Road, Dubois. The center has 570 acres of open pastureland. The terrain of SIPAC includes hills, shallow soils, natural hard pan and rocky outcroppings. SIPAC’s main research areas are forage-based operations, cattle, sheep and goat management, forest management and aquaculture.
