Forage tour for livestock producers set for August

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Forage management is essential to sustainable livestock operations, and on Aug. 27 Hoosier livestock producers have the opportunity to enhance their forage management skills and practices.

Purdue Extension, the Indiana Forage Council and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture are hosting a North Central Indiana Forage Tour for livestock producers. The tour runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 27 and begins at Prairie Heights High School, 245 S. 1150 E., LaGrange, Indiana.

The tour will focus on how excellent forage management practices impact the performance of livestock through enhancements of yield, quality, and persistence of stands.

The tour stops at Stan and Deb Notestine’s farm, Courtright Farms, Country Meadow Farm and Lewis Century Stock Farms. Each location provides different insights into forage and livestock management.

Historically, producers focused heavily on the well-being of their livestock with less attention to the diversity and health of forage crops.

“Those who succeed in using improved forage management systems understand the importance of caring for the forage resource that improves their soil and feeds their livestock,” said Keith Johnson, Purdue University professor of agronomy and forage Extension specialist.

The cost of the tour is $20 per person. Checks can be made out to the Indiana Forage Council Inc., and sent to P.O. Box 2710, West Lafayette, IN 47996. Send RSVPs to Johnson at johnsonk@purdue.edu by Aug. 20.
