Peace studies conference to highlight 21st century social justice movements

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Social justice movements promoting equality, labor rights, immigration reform, peace and the environment will be the topic of a conference April 20-21 at Purdue University. The conference is called "Visiting Peace and Justice Movements in the 21st Century."

The Committee on Peace Studies, the Department of Political Science and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies are sponsoring the conference, which includes presentations by three distinguished scholars and activists, as well as six panels organized by students in Political Science 230, Introduction to the Study of Peace.

The conference, which is free and open to the public, will take place in Beering Hall, Room 2280. The schedule of speakers and panels is as follows:

Friday

* 4 p.m. Joseph Varga, professor of labor studies, Indiana University, and longtime labor activist, on "The New Working Class, Labor Movements, and Economic Justice."

* 5-5:50 p.m. Student-led panel on workers' rights.

* 7 p.m. Carla Wallace, organizer for the national network Showing Up for Racial Justice and its Louisville chapter, on "Movements for Racial Justice."

* 8-8:50 p.m. Student-led panel on racial justice.

Saturday

* 9 a.m. Heidi Lewis, assistant professor and associate director of feminist and gender studies at Colorado College, on "Feminisms, Race, Culture and Justice Movements."

* 10-10:50 a.m. Student-led panel on women's rights.

* 11-11:50 a.m. Student-led panel on immigrant rights.

* 1-1:50 p.m. Student-led panel on the environment.

* 2-2:50 p.m. Student-led panel on peace.

The conference will encourage formal and informal dialogue and debate among guest speakers, students, and members of the broader Greater Lafayette community. Refreshments will be provided during breaks, and everyone from the university and larger community is invited to attend for part or all of the presentations and discussions.

State Street Redevelopment Project construction is in process. This work is closing portions of Stadium Avenue, McCormick Road, Airport Road and Williams Street and significantly affecting surrounding thoroughfares in West Lafayette.
