Purdue Veterinary Medicine partnership enables veterinary practices to demonstrate commitment to inclusive work environment

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University’s Center of Excellence for Diversity and Inclusion in Veterinary Medicine is partnering with the online educational resource VetVine® to help practices to show that they are committed to an inclusive environment, both for professionals and clients.

Called the TOGETHER Program, the on-line educational offering involves a 10 percent discount for VetVine members through April 30.

To enroll, practice owners just have to register all members of their veterinary team, veterinarians and veterinary technicians, as a single group in the TOGETHER Program. Individuals must complete 11 online modules with nine associated quizzes; three hours of documented volunteer community service with written reflections; four hours of pertinent activities with written reflections; and a one-to-two page capstone paper on how the information learned will be used to strengthen diversity and inclusion in veterinary medicine.

As individual practice members complete the program, each person will earn a certificate, pin, and nine hours of  continuing education credit.

When all veterinary professionals in a given practice complete the program, the practice receives a TOGETHER certificate and decal to show their commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Topics include:

•     The case for diversity in veterinary medicine

•     Diversity lingo

•     The history of diversity in veterinary medicine

•     Stereotype threat

•     Microaggressions

•     The LGBT community

•     Effective communication with Spanish-speaking clients and colleagues

•     Persons with disabilities

•     Men in veterinary medicine

•     Generational diversity

•     Affirmative leadership

•     P-12 engagement

The discount applies only for VetVine members enrolling in the TOGETHER Program. VetVine, which is free to join, serves as an AAVSB RACE-approved online educational resource for veterinary professionals, pet care providers, and allied industry friends and supporters of the profession.

No refunds or substitutions will be provided after the practice group has registered. Should someone leave the practice, the practice owner will notify Purdue and that individual will not be required to finish their certificate for the practice to successfully complete the TOGETHER Program.

Should someone join the practice after the practice group has registered, the practice owner will need to register and pay for that individual to complete the certificate for practicing veterinarians and veterinary technicians at full price ($300) through the Center of Excellence for Diversity and Inclusion Website. That individual then will be added to the group required to complete their certificates for the practice to attain TOGETHER Program completion.

The Center of Excellence for Diversity and Inclusion in Veterinary Medicine was established in 2013 through a partnership between the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, and the American Veterinary Medical Association.  The center presents online professional certificate programs designed for veterinarians, veterinary technicians, educators, students, and staff who seek to improve their communication, leadership, teaching/learning, and cultural competency skills. Individuals interested in enrolling in the certificate program, apart from the TOGETHER Program, can register through the main site, HumanCenteredVetMed.org, but will not receive a discount.
