WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University Galleries will present work by photographer Aïda Muluneh in exhibition “Memory of Hope” at the Fountain Gallery from Feb. 27 through March 31.

This exhibition will feature work from two photography series, “World is Nine” and “Memory of Hope.” In her work, Muluneh uses bold, striking images to ask provocative questions about the life we live as people, as nations, and as beings. Her carefully composed photographs read as poems, using symbols and painted figures to tell stories of the past, present and future.

Born in Ethiopia in 1974, Aïda Muluneh left the country at a young age and spent an itinerant childhood between Yemen and England. After several years in a boarding school in Cyprus, she finally settled in Canada in 1985. She holds a degree in film from Howard University in Washington D.C. Muluneh’s work has been shown around the world, including South Africa, Mali, Senegal, Egypt, Canada, France, Germany, England and China. Most recently, she has been featured as part of the exhibition “Being: New Photography 2018” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. In addition to her work as an exhibiting artist, Muluneh continues her work as a photojournalist and commercial photographer; her work can be found in several international publications.

Muluneh will be presenting a talk, “Crossroads of Afro-futurism in Fine Art Photography,” at Matthews Hall, Room 210, at 3 p.m. March 23. She will also be commenting on her work during the closing reception for “Memory of Hope” in Fountain Gallery at 5:30 p.m. March 23.
