Extension’s annual Lambing School open for registration

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sheep and goat producers can brush up on lambing and kidding protocol and reducing newborn losses in time for the spring lambing season at a Purdue Extension workshop Feb. 24.

The Purdue Lambing School, conducted by Mike Neary, Extension small ruminant specialist, is offered to new, beginning and veteran sheep or goat producers. The program will run 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Purdue Animal Sciences Research and Education Center Sheep Unit.

The workshop will cover crucial production phases of late gestation, including lactation and care of newborns.

“One of the goals of this workshop is to educate producers about this critical production period and to make people more comfortable as their animals go through the lambing and kidding process,” Neary said.

The workshop is designed to be an interactive experience with informal questions and discussion focused on nutrition, reproduction, health considerations, lambing barn obstetrics and necessary management practices.

Registration forms are available online at http://www.ansc.purdue.edu/SH/events/LambingSchool2018.pdf and must be submitted by February 15. The form and enclosed check must be addressed and mailed to Mike Neary, Purdue University ANSC, CRTN, 270 S. Russell St. West Lafayette, IN 47907-2041. Registration is limited to 40 participants on a first-come basis. Map and driving instructions can be viewed on the registration form.

Cost of registration for the Lambing School is $35 per person, which includes coffee and donuts in the morning, lunch and all educational handouts. Checks should be payable to Purdue University.
