Registration underway for 2018 Duke Energy Academy at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Duke Energy Academy at Purdue is accepting admission from high school juniors and seniors and secondary teachers for the 2018 program in June at the Purdue University campus.

Each year, 50 students and 34 teachers are selected to participate in the immersive, weeklong academy, which focuses on the energy sciences and engineering. Participation is free of charge, and a $400 stipend is awarded to teachers who complete the program.

This year's event will be June 17-23. The deadline to register is Jan. 16. Registration and more information are available here.

"Now in its seventh year, Duke Energy's partnership with Purdue has helped introduce students and teachers to the world of STEM," said Pankaj Sharma, managing director of Discovery Park's Purdue Energy Center. "Participants in the Duke Energy Academy are learning how to engage with new experiences that could have a determining effect on their future careers and the future of energy sciences as well."

Tapping Purdue's strengths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, students and teachers will explore the field of energy through a series of laboratory research, classroom lectures and hands-on activities, and tour a solar farm and the Duke Energy Generation facility in southwest Indiana.

During the 2018 academy, participants also will learn about emerging topics in energy such as drone policy and their usages in monitoring infrastructure, followed by a drone demonstration and related hands-on activities in an event led by Lawrence Fabina, manager of continuous improvement and coordinator of the USA Energy Reduction Program for global steel and mining giant ArcelorMittal in Chicago.

Throughout the week, teachers work on STEM-based energy lesson plans for their classrooms. Academy student participants receive the full Purdue experience by staying in residence halls and eating meals together in campus dining facilities.

Known as DEAP, the Duke Energy Academy at Purdue is organized by the Purdue Energy Center, a research center within Discovery Park that focuses on advancing energy sciences and engineering for sustainable energy solutions. The annual weeklong event is primarily funded by a substantial grant from the Duke Energy Foundation, which covers participation fees for all attendees.

Current co-sponsors and supporters of the program are ArcelorMittal, Bowen Engineering, CMS Energy, Duke Energy and Tipmont REMC. Within Purdue, supporters include Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Purdue Energy Center, Discovery Park, Laboratory of Renewable Resource Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Renewable Energy Extension and Youth Development and Agricultural Education.

Discovery Park is a place where Purdue researchers move beyond traditional boundaries, collaborating across disciplines and with policymakers and business leaders to create solutions for a better world. Grand challenges of global health, global conflict and security, and those that lie at the nexus of sustainable energy, world food supply, water and the environment are the focus of researchers in Discovery Park. The translation of discovery to impact is integrated into the fabric of Discovery Park through entrepreneurship programs and partnerships.
