Purdue Extension hosts 2017 SEPAC Field Day

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue Extension will host the 2017 Southeast Purdue Agricultural Center (SEPAC) Field Day on Aug. 17, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Participants will get the latest updates on weed and crop management from Purdue University agronomists and Extension specialists, said Jeffery Hermesch, Purdue Extension-Decatur County Educator and one of the event organizers.

“I’m looking forward to a good turnout this year, especially with the variable weather we’ve had and the uncertain condition of many crops” Hermesch said. “We have plenty of information to help farmers better manage their crops under challenging conditions.”

Topics and presenters are:

“Weed Management Update: Spring Weather Challenges, Roundup-Ready Xtend Soybeans and New Herbicide Traits”; Bill Johnson, professor of botany and plant pathology and Purdue Extension weed specialist.

“Managing Soybeans for Top Yields”; Shaun Casteel, associate professor of agronomy and Purdue Extension soybean specialist.

“UAV Basics: Scouting for Diseases and Weeds”; Joel Wahlman, SEPAC superintendent, and Alex Helms, farm technical coordinator at SEPAC.

There will also be a presentation on the FFA Corn Challenge. The event concludes with lunch and a presentation by Peter Goldsbrough, professor of botany and plant pathology, on “Genetically Modified Crops: Marvel or Malady?”

The event is free but registration is required.
