Experts to discuss improved forage varieties and disease prevention at Indiana Forage Council’s annual seminar

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — As part of its annual meeting and seminar on March 20, the Indiana Forage Council (IFC) has invited two industry experts to discuss forage practices that can keep livestock healthy and improve overall quality and profitability.

Purdue University’s Christina Wilson, a clinical assistant professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine, will give pointers on how to detect plants and other forages that are inherently toxic, potentially leading to disorders and disease in animals. She also will discuss how some plants will become a concern after being contaminated with harmful substances like mycotoxins.

Sam Stratton of Forage Solutions, Inc., will talk about how enhancements in forage varieties can lead to more efficient weed control, pest resistance, higher nutritional quality, improved yield, and, as a result, increased profitability. Stratton has noted that these enhanced forage varieties demand a higher price in the marketplace because of their added value.

The public is invited to attend the presentations during the IFC’s annual meeting, which will be held March 20 at the Hamilton County Community Building, 9090 East 131st St., Fishers. The annual meeting for members and guests starts at 4:30 p.m. and is followed by dinner at 6 p.m. The seminar, featuring Stratton and Wilson, begins at 7 p.m.

Participation in the annual meeting is not required for participation in the dinner and seminar. The cost of the dinner is $15. Attendees are requested to RSVP by March 13 to Jason Tower, towerj@purdue.edu or 812-678-4427.
