Trustees honor Boilermaker Olympic medalists

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University’s Board of Trustees on Friday (Oct. 14) approved resolutions honoring Boilermakers who earned medals representing the United States in the recent Rio Summer Olympics.

The resolutions honored rowing team member Amanda Elmore, divers David Boudia and Steele Johnson, and diving coach Adam Soldati. In addition to the resolutions, the athletes will be honored on Saturday (Oct. 15) during the first quarter of Purdue’s Homecoming football game against Iowa. Prior to noon kickoff, from 10:30-11:30 a.m., Elmore and Johnson are scheduled to appear during the Boilermaker Crossing pregame event at Weist Plaza between Mackey Arena and Holloway Gymnasium. The event is free and open to the public.

Elmore earned a gold medal at the Rio Games as part of the women’s eight rowing team, becoming Purdue’s first female Boilermaker gold medalist and just the fifth Boilermaker to claim gold since 1900.

Elmore, who earned a bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences from Purdue in 2013, was an American Collegiate Rowing First Boat All-American in 2011, 2012 and 2013; Purdue’s Most Valuable Oarswoman in 2012; and a 2014 member of the All-Big Ten first team.

Currently a graduate student at the University of Michigan, Elmore is a graduate of Harrison High School near West Lafayette.

Boudia and Johnson teamed up at the Rio Olympics to claim silver medals in the 10-meter synchronized platform diving event, recording the best U.S. finish ever. Boudia also brought home a bronze medal in the individual 10-meter platform.

Soldati, who has been Purdue’s diving head coach since 2005, served as an assistant diving coach for Team USA in both the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics.

Before graduating from Purdue in 2013, Boudia of Noblesville, Indiana, also competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where he won a gold in the 10-meter platform and bronze in the synchronized 10-meter platform events.

Johnson of Carmel, Indiana, is a sophomore at Purdue and a member of the men’s swimming and diving team.
