'Dawn or Doom' presentations to be broadcast on C-SPAN

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Three sessions of Purdue University's recent conference "Dawn or Doom: Future Technology Risks and Rewards" will be broadcast over the holidays on C-SPAN beginning Wednesday, Dec. 21.

The sessions were recorded during the Dawn or Doom conference on the Purdue campus on Oct. 3 – 4.

The first Dawn or Doom session scheduled to be broadcast is that of Marcus Rogers, professor and department head of Computer and Information Technology, who will be discussing

"Cyber Security & Social Media: How Big is Your Digital Footprint and Why Should You Care."

Roger's presentation is scheduled to be broadcast Wed., Dec. 21 at 10:15 p.m.

Up-to-date schedules are available on the C-SPAN website at c-span.org.

Two additional Dawn or Doom sessions were also recorded and are expected to be broadcast during the holidays.

Jennifer Neville, associate professor and Purdue's Miller Family Chair of Computer Science and Statistics, presented "AI Easy vs. AI Hard" about the recent dramatic progress of artificial intelligence research.

Also, a panel of journalists who report on technology discussed issues in their field. The panel included Jared Council, Indianapolis Business Journal; Natalie DiBlasio, USA Today; Emily Dreyfuss, Wired; and Quentin Hardy, The New York Times.

Gerry McCartney, system chief information officer and vice president for Information Technology at Purdue, and director of the Dawn or Doom conference director, said having C-SPAN at this year's event was an added bonus.

"Dawn or Doom explores the societal risks and rewards of emerging technologies such as robotics, artificial intelligence, the 'gig economy,' and virtual reality," he said. "These are important issues for our nation, so we were pleased that C-SPAN decided to join us this year for part of the conference, and we're looking forward to re-living part of the event by watching the broadcasts."

In addition to the C-SPAN broadcasts, 23 of the 2016 Dawn or Doom sessions are also available on a dedicated YouTube channel playlist.
