Political science prof on candidate nominations, third party politics, and immigration

EXPERT ON IMMIGRATION, POLITICS

James McCann, a Purdue University professor in political science, has conducted research on divisive candidate nominations with each of the major parties, the emergence of third parties and, more recently, the political incorporation of immigrants in the United States.

In 2006, he began surveying Mexican immigrants regarding political participation and other civic issues. He is a co-principal investigator of the “2012 Latino Immigrant National Election Study” (LINES).

McCann also studies political behavior in Mexico, and in 2000 he served as an international election observer in Mexico. McCann is co-author of "Democratizing Mexico: Public Opinion and Electoral Choices," and he is part of a team of scholars collecting and evaluating survey data to understand how Mexico is transitioning from the dominant-party era to the new democratic system.
