Les Violons du Roy will bring classical performance practices to Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Les Violons du Roy is a 15-piece ensemble that specializes in the performance practices of the 17th and 18th centuries. This special engagement will feature award-winning French pianist Alexandre Tharaud in a celebration of the classical movement at 8 p.m. April 16 at Purdue's Loeb Playhouse. This performance is presented by Purdue Convocations with Friends support from Ginny Tyler.

Deriving its name from the renowned string orchestra of the court of the French Kings, Les Violons du Roy has performed for audiences worldwide for over three decades and has several Juno Award-winning recordings to its credit. Les Violons du Roy specializes in both a vast chamber music repertoire and recreations of performance practices from the 17th and 18th centuries. Under founder Bernard Labadie's artistic direction, the ensemble uses copies of period-specific bows to replicate the precise sound of these pieces' original performances.

The centerpiece of the program will feature Purdue's new Steinway concert grand piano for the early Mozart concerto, the "Jeunehomme," performed by Tharaud. The evening also includes the overture to "Olympie," a Voltaire play, composed by J.M. Kraus, along with W.A. Mozart's intensely passionate Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K 550.

Tickets are $28 for adults and $22 for children 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students. Tickets are available at the Stewart Center box office at 765-494-3933 or 800-914-SHOW. Group tickets are also available to groups of 10 more.
