Purdue to host forum on managing Indiana's water

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University will host the Indiana Water Forum, a discussion that will focus on managing Indiana's water use and sources.

The program on Nov. 12 at the Beck Agricultural Center, 4540 U.S. 52 W, West Lafayette, will focus on presentations by representatives of the water industry and utilities supply forecasters on the use and regulations of water in agriculture.

Ronald Turco, a professor of agronomy at Purdue, noted that water is a critical part of Purdue's research and extension missions.

"This panel of experts will provide a significant look at where we are and where we are going in terms of water supply," he said. "Our water future is ours to control if we make the right decisions."

* Deborah Swackhamer, professor of environmental health sciences at the University of Minnesota, "Water Sustainability - Can We Get There," 8:45 a.m.

* Thomas M. Bruns, president of Aqua Indiana Inc., "Developing and Managing Indiana's Water Systems," 10:15 a.m.

* Vince Griffin, vice president of energy and environmental policy Indiana Chamber of Commerce, "Water as an Economic Driver for Indiana," 10:45 a.m.

* Doug Gotham, director of state utility forecasting group at Purdue, "What Can 'The Water People' Learn from the Electricity Forecasters," 11:15 a.m.

* Otto Doering, professor of agriculture economics at Purdue, lunch presentation, "Critical Water Issues We Need to Address," 11:45 a.m.

* Tom Davenport of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5, "Water and the Environment," 12:45 p.m.

* Justin Schneider, senior policy adviser and counsel, public policy team of Indiana Farm Bureau, “Water and Agriculture” at 1:15 p.m.

* Lyndon Kelly, irrigation educator at Purdue University, "Indiana Irrigation Now and in The Future," 2 p.m.

* Andrew Whelton, assistant professor of civil engineering, and environmental and ecological engineering at Purdue, "Planning for a Water Contamination Emergency, Research and Education Needs," 2:30 p.m.
