Purdue Varsity Glee Club kicks off its year with annual ‘First Nighter’ performance

August 21, 2015

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue’s Varsity Glee Club will start the new academic year with a free performance next Friday (Aug. 28), with its annual “First Nighter” concert. A tradition that dates back many years, the concert is the first opportunity to see this year’s Glee Club in action.

The Glee Club will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. in the Elliott Hall of Music. Doors open at 7 p.m., and admission is free.

“Working with this talented group of men is a privilege,” said Bill Griffel, Purdue Musical Organizations director.

This annual concert has become a tradition for the Glee Club and fans alike. The concert had been held in the Purdue Memorial Union for many years. However, demand for seats far exceeded the space available and the show was moved to the Elliott Hall of Music in 2013.

The Glee Club performs a vast repertoire of musical styles, including barbershop, gospel, vocal jazz, contemporary hits and classical choral selections.

“We look forward to this performance each year,” said Griffel. “The energy and excitement the men bring is incredible. Add in the enthusiasm of the audience, and it makes for an amazing night.”

Nearly 300 students perform with PMO annually. Purdue has no school of music, so nearly every academic major is represented in the organization.
