Grammy-nominated jazz singer – Cécile McLorin Salvant – to perform at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Cécile McLorin Salvant, winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, will bring her jazz repertoire to Purdue's Loeb Playhouse at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22. This performance is presented by Purdue Convocations with Friends support from the Davis Family Endowment, Dr. Nancy DiMartino and Stephen Borghi.
Ticket holders are invited to attend a pre-show discussion before the performance at 6:30 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 310. Don Seybold, host of "Inside Jazz" on WBAA, and pianist Judd Danby will discuss McLorin Salvant's music.
Born to a French mother and Haitian father, McLorin Salvant took a long path to jazz and blues, starting with childhood choral singing and classical voice study. After moving to France to study further, teacher and reedist Jean-François Bonnel introduced her to improvisation, instrumental works and 20th century vocal repertoire. She recorded her debut album with his Paris Quintet in 2009, but it was her win at the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in Washington, D.C., that captured the jazz world's attention.
Her immersion in songs from the 1900s through the 1930s, including works by Fats Waller and Bessie Smith, showcase her vocal shadings and attention to detail. Her 2014 album, "WomanChild," was nominated for a Grammy Award.
