SW Purdue ag center field day includes health fair, kids' activities

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A health fair, children's activities and educational sessions on a wide range of agricultural topics will highlight the Southwest Purdue Agriculture Center Field Day, July 9 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The center is at 4369 N. Purdue Road, Vincennes.
"This will be a fun and educational day packed full of learning and observing the research production techniques being conducted at the center," said Dennis Nowaskie, SWPAC superintendent.
The event will start with a health fair, presented by Good Samaritan Hospital, from 7:30-9 a.m. There will be blood pressure tests, grip strength testing and pulse monitoring.
At the Kids Zone, children age 5 and older can experience a rock climb slide, plant station, coloring and other activities throughout the day.
Educational presentations include "Maximize the Return on Your Seed Corn Investment," with Bob Nielsen, Extension corn specialist; "Disease Update 2015," with Kiersten Wise, associate professor of botany and plant pathology; and "Grape Production Opportunities for Southern Indiana," with Bruce Bordelon, professor of viticulture.
Other topics and presenters:
* "Best Management Practices for Managing Striped Cucumber Beetles and Bacterial Wilt on Muskmelons." Rick Foster, Extension entomologist.
* "Production of Healthy Vegetables in High Tunnels." Dan Egel, Extension plant pathologist.
* "Canola Production in the Lower Midwest." Chuck Mansfield, Extension agronomist.
* "The Potential of Hybrid Cottonwood as a Bioenergy Crop." Rick Meilan, molecular tree physiologist.
* "Soybean Production." Shaun Casteel, assistant professor of agronomy.
* "Benefits of Starter Fertilizer." Jim Camberato, associate professor of agronomy.
There will also be tours of the center, a luncheon and an optional Pesticide Applicator Recertification Program class. Participants applying for PARP credit should bring identification and a $10 registration fee.
