WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – On May 12, Purdue Galleries opens a new group exhibit of contemporary artworks composed of textiles or textile-like objects.

“FABRICation” will be presented from May 12 through Aug. 8 in all three Purdue University Galleries: the Robert L. Ringel Gallery in Stewart Center, Fountain Gallery in downtown Lafayette, and Patti & Rusty Rueff Galleries in Yue-Kong Pao Hall (opening FABRICation on May 20).

FABRICation features the works of seven artists (Erin Castellan, Kristy Deetz, Virginia Derryberry, Reni Gower, Rachel Hayes, Susan Iverson and Natalie Smith) that incorporate a textile sensibility through elements of “fabric and fabrication.” Inspired by a rich array of historical textiles, these complex multipart constructions use traditional handicraft to contrast our culture’s rampant media consumption with the nuance of slow work wrought by hand.

Works range from delicate illusions to layered constructions to architectural interventions. Mixed media includes oil and acrylic paint, vintage clothing, aluminum screens, wool, silk, plastic, thread, vinyl, burlap, rug-hold, glass, recycled objects and found fabrics. Whether painting, tapestry or construct, these works interweave sensory pleasure with repetitive process to invoke introspection and reflection.

Funding for FABRICation was made possible in part by Virginia Commonwealth University, VCUarts and the Painting and Printmaking Department.

The catalog for FABRICation can be purchased online at http://www.blurb.com/b/5592092-fabrication.

On Friday, May 15, Purdue Galleries will present two events in support of the exhibition. At noon the exhibition curators Reni Gower and Kristy Deetz will present a Brown Bag Lecture at the Robert L. Ringel Gallery in Stewart Center. And from 6-8 p.m. Galleries will host a reception in the Fountain Gallery in conjunction with the downtown Gallery Walk.
