Purdue’s Daniels to speak at national conference on access, excellence in higher education

January 14, 2015

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University President Mitch Daniels on Thursday (Jan. 15) will be a featured speaker at a national conference in Washington, D.C., to explore a key challenge facing colleges and universities: how to make high-quality higher education available to an ever broader and more diverse student body.

"Access & Excellence: Bridging Higher Education's Growing Divide," hosted by Opportunity America and Arizona State University, will take place from 8-11:30 a.m. at the Newseum Knight Conference Center. The conference will be streamed live at www.asu.edu/newseumevent. Participants have been invited to tweet during the conference using the hash tag #higheredaccess on Twitter.

Daniels will take part in an armchair conversation at 9:30 a.m. on "Educating for Democracy and Global Competitiveness" with Michael Crow, president of Arizona State University and chairman of the University Innovation Alliance. Jeffrey Selingo, special adviser and professor of practice at Arizona State University, and contributor to the Chronicle of Higher Education and the Washington Post, will serve as moderator.

The conference also will feature an opening keynote by Hilary Pennington, vice president of the Education, Creativity and Free Expression program at Ford Foundation; a panel discussion framing the challenge facing colleges and universities today; and a final session exploring what four pioneering institutions are doing to impart top-tier educations to an ever broader group of students. Additional event details are available here.

Opportunity America is a Washington-based nonprofit promoting economic mobility - work, skills, careers, entrepreneurship and inclusion.
