Purdue applications set all-time record

February 4, 2015

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - More high school seniors are seeking admission to Purdue University than ever before.

As of Wednesday (Feb. 4), 44,046 prospective first-year students submitted applications for fall 2015 to the West Lafayette campus, according to Purdue’s Office of Admissions. This is a 17.4 percent increase from this time last year.

Purdue began notifying applicants regarding admission on Dec. 12. Feb. 1 marked Purdue’s priority deadline for fall admission. Purdue is still accepting applications for most programs, but available space will be a factor in admissions for later applicants. Last year, 39,706 applications were received in total.

Applications are higher across all categories, including academic programs, Indiana residents, out-of-state students, and among underrepresented and women students. Purdue officials say the increase is a result of the university’s reputation for excellence and commitment to affordability and accessibility.

Other contributing factors include an improved application process through the nationwide Common Application and work by the Office of Admissions and International Students and Scholars. As part of their recruiting efforts, admissions officers have focused on recruiting Indiana students, forging strong relationships with Indiana high school counselors, and communicating with students and parents about what it takes to be successful at Purdue. Strategic recruiting in both the United States and countries underrepresented at Purdue is also enhancing the geographic diversity of the applicant pool. College-specific recruitment efforts also enhance Purdue’s reach.
