Ohio River Valley woodlands, wildlife workshop March 27

March 10, 2015

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Woodland owners will get expert advice on how to improve the health and stewardship of their property by attending the Ohio River Valley Woodland and Wildlife Workshop co-sponsored by Purdue Extension.

The event will be March 27 at the Sharonville Convention Center in Sharonville, Ohio, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. EDT. It is designed for, but not limited to, landowners from Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.

"Everyone has different interests in what they want out of their land," said Brian MacGowan, Purdue Extension wildlife specialist and a workshop presenter. "This program is an opportunity to learn from some of the top experts in their field and to meet and interact with many other woodland owners."

There are sessions in which participants will learn about a variety of wildlife and other natural resource management practices. Sessions will cover:

* Woodlands: maps, land plans, tree identification, woodland certification, determining the value of trees and timber, and invasive species such as the Asian longhorned beetle and thousand cankers disease of walnut trees.

* Wildlife: food plots, game cameras, woodland butterflies, deer and wild turkey management, and insect life in woodland pools and ponds.

* The unusual: woodland fungi (such as morels), identifying animal skulls and a topic called "Weird Things in Your Woods."

The sessions will be led by Extension specialists from the University of Kentucky, Ohio State University and Purdue University as well as from the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Registration in advance is required. The registration fee before March 17 is $45 per person. It increases to $55 after that date, with a final registration deadline of March 24. Registration is available online at http://woodlandstewards.osu.edu.
