World Film Forum in downtown Lafayette this November

October 24, 2014

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The World Film Forum will present "Screening the Past" in November 2014 with three movies from the former Soviet Union, Greece and France.

The films will be shown at the Lafayette Theater, 600 Main St., and doors open to the public for free popcorn and cash bar at 6:30 p.m. Brief introductions for each film will be given at 7 p.m. and presenters will lead audience discussions after the screenings, said Antonia Syson, associate professor of classics and forum coordinator. The event is sponsored by the School of Languages and Cultures and by the Interdisciplinary Film and Video Studies Program.

The dates, films and presenters are:

* Nov. 4. 7-9:30 p.m., "White Sun of the Desert," from the former Soviet Union is a 1970 action, adventure and comedy with English subtitles. Its music, one-liners and ironic mockery of Soviet mythology have made this Soviet Western an audience favorite ever since its release. Presenter is John Hope, an assistant professor of Russian.

* Nov. 11. 7-9:30 p.m., "Z," from France and Algeria with English subtitles, was directed by Costa-Gavras. A political assassination plot is uncovered, and then covered up again, in "Z." This 1969 political thriller is based on the true story of the death of Greek politician Grigoris Lambrakis in 1963. Presenter is Madeleine Henry, professor of classics and head of the School of Languages and Cultures.

* Nov. 18. 7-9:30 p.m. "La Rafle," (The Round Up) a 2010 drama from France with English subtitles, was directed by Roselyne Bosch. The film confronts one of the most notorious examples of official complicity in the Nazi occupation of France: the roundup of 13,152 Jewish men, women and children in Paris' Indoor Bicycle Arena, before they were sent to French internment camps and then to Auschwitz. Presenter is Allen Wood, professor of French.
