Purdue police urge pedestrian safety at crosswalks

October 2, 2014

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue and West Lafayette police want to remind pedestrians that they need to obey the crosswalk signals at the intersection of State and Marsteller streets just off campus.

Vehicles traveling east on State Street have a designated traffic light for a northbound turn onto Memorial Mall Drive. When the light has been activated for that lane of travel, westbound State Street cycles to red, yielding to the Memorial Mall Drive traffic.

"This has been causing our students and members of our community to assume that eastbound State Street has a red traffic signal as well, which it does not, causing a hazard as pedestrians are stepping into flowing traffic," said Purdue police Capt. Eric Chin. “We have had some complaints of people not following the pedestrian crosswalk sign there. It is against the law to cross when the walk sign is not lit, and we'll be paying attention to that."

Chin urges pedestrians to use crosswalks throughout campus. Police can warn or cite pedestrians for jaywalking.
