La Yegros to perform at Convos' season-opening dance party

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – La Yegros, a powerful presence in Buenos Aires, Argentina's underground scene for many years, will kick off the 2014-15 Purdue Convocations season at the Four Points by Sheraton Ballroom on September 12 at 8 p.m. This performance is presented by Purdue Convocations.
Ticket holders are invited to attend a pre-show "cumbia" dance lesson at 7 p.m.
With exports such as Astor Piazzolla and tango to Mercedes Sosa and folk revival decades ago, Buenos Aires is the place where musical styles merge and transform. Yegros, a group led by Mariana Yegros, fuses the dancehall roots of the infectious Colombian cumbia beat with tropical rhythms and the rural folk of the rainforests with the attitude of hip-hop and electronica.
"I was brought up with the spirit of folklore, and my father carried a radio around all day and night … I was always surrounded by music," Yegros says. "So writing, for me, is inspired by a wide array of sounds and styles, and narratives. And today, I live in a very modern city, and am moved by very modern musical concepts."
La Yegros will bring the "future sounds of Buenos Aires" to the Four Points by Sheraton ballroom, where their music, fashion, and a big dance floor will kick off the 2014-15 season.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students. Initiated in 1902, Purdue Convocations was one of the first professional performing arts presenters in the United States.
