Invasive species workshop to offer continuing education

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University Department of Forestry and Natural Resources is offering a two-day, continuing education workshop on invasive species management in conjunction with the Indiana chapters of The Wildlife Society and the Society of American Foresters.

The 2014 Invasive Species Management Continuing Education Workshop will run from 11:30 a.m. Sept. 24 to noon the next day. Speakers from Purdue, Ohio State University, the Nature Conservancy in Indiana and Prophetstown State Park will speak on invasive plants and insects.

Invasive species are a major threat to biodiversity, and estimated costs to the U.S. economy are estimated in the billions of dollars.

* Introduction, Dean Zimmerman, head of the Continuing Education Committee at The Wildlife Society.

* "Invasive Plant Reporting and Invasive Plants for Sale - What You Need to Know," Ellen Jacquart, the Nature Conservancy in Indiana.

* "New and Emerging Threats," Sally Weeks, dendrologist at Purdue.

* "Herbicide Resistance and Mode of Action," Bill Johnson, Purdue weed scientist.

* "Non-native Insects and Diseases You Should Have on Your Radar," Kathy Smith, Ohio State University Extension forestry program director.

* "Controlling Woody Invasive Plants," Ron Rathfon, regional Purdue Extension forester.

* "Community Response to Asian Bush Honeysuckle Removal," Mike Jenkins, associate professor in forest ecology at Purdue.

* "Martell Forest/FNR Farm - Forest Community Responses to Bush Honeysuckle Removal," Jenkins and Charlotte Freeman, graduate research assistant at Purdue.

* "Prophetstown State Park - Control of Bush Honeysuckle, Autumn Olive, Mulberry and Osage Orange," Jason Getz, property manager.

Continuing education credit hours will be offered by The Wildlife Society, the Society of American Foresters and the Private Applicator Recertification Program. Registration is due Sept. 15.
