WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The chief economist for Deere & Co. will review historical developments in agriculture and give his insight into what could lie ahead for the industry during Purdue University’s James C. Snyder Memorial Lecture April 11.

J.B. Penn guides Deere's policy development and corporate growth initiatives worldwide by analyzing global trends in economics, business conditions and governmental policies.

His presentation - "Reflections on the Agriculture Industry - Another New Era Ahead?" - will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Krannert Building, 403 W. State St.

A panel discussion, "Advancing the Agriculture Industry Through Graduate Programs," precedes the lecture at 10 a.m. Panelists are Penn, who earned a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from Purdue; Michael Boehlje, distinguished professor of agricultural economics; and David Howell, a Purdue Distinguished Agricultural Alumnus and owner of Howell Farms in Middletown, Ind.

The Department of Agricultural Economics will also present its Apex Awards as part of the day's activities. The annual awards honor individuals who have a strong connection to the department and have made significant contributions to agriculture, business or economics.

The Snyder Memorial Lecture is celebrating its 40th anniversary. It honors the late James C. Snyder, a professor of agricultural economics. After completing graduate study at Purdue, Snyder joined the Purdue agricultural economics faculty and was widely recognized for his teaching and research.
