WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch from late Saturday (March 1) through Monday morning (March 3) for areas of central Indiana, including Tippecanoe County.

There is potential for significant amounts of snowfall, as well as a sleet and snow mix in some areas, resulting in hazardous roads and reduced visibility. Forecasts are calling for 6-10 inches of snow, the heaviest amounts on Sunday (March 2) in the Greater Lafayette area.

University public safety officials urge those traveling to or from campus to be cautious on the roadways. Travel tips from the Indiana State Police include:

* Check the forecast

* Notify family and friends of your travel route

* Allow extra time to get to your destination

* Clear your vehicle of snow and ice before leaving

* Keep your gas tank full, if possible

* Keep your cell phone charged

* Have an emergency kit

The Indiana Department of Transportation offers updates on road conditions by phone at 800-261-7623 or on its Traffic Wise website.
