Purdue to help rural landowners care for natural resources

January 27, 2014

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue Extension is offering workshops for rural landowners who want to learn about techniques, practices and assistance for developing and enhancing forests, landscapes, ponds and other natural resources.

"Helping Families Conserve Nature on Their Land" will be given in eight-week sessions. One will be at the Tippecanoe County Extension office in Lafayette starting Feb. 13. A second will be held at two locations: the Monroe County Extension office in Bloomington for the first four weeks, starting Feb. 19, and the Brown County Public Library in Nashville for the second four weeks, beginning March 19. All sessions are from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Thursday.

Workshop topics include lawn and landscaping conservation practices, small-farm sustainable planning, and management of trees and forests, wildlife habitat, ponds and invasive species.

"Landowners will be better equipped to identify what they have and then enhance positive aspects resulting in more enjoyment for them," said Brian MacGowan, an Extension wildlife specialist.

A field tour of a property will be conducted from 8:30-11 a.m. March 29 in Tippecanoe County and on April 5 in Monroe County. Refreshments and snacks will be served at each session.

Registration fee is $50 before Feb. 10 and $65 after that. Make checks payable to Tippecanoe County Education Fund and mail to Purdue Extension - Tippecanoe County. 3150 Sagamore Parkway S., Lafayette, IN, 47905, or to Brown County Education Fund and at Purdue Extension -  Brown County, 802 Memorial Drive, P.O. Box 7, Nashville, IN,  47448.
