Purdue students prepare for return to class

January 22, 2014

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - As the investigation into the fatal shooting of a Purdue University student continues, the campus community is making preparations for the resumption of classes on Thursday (Jan. 23).

The shooting, which took place around noon Tuesday (Jan. 21) in the Electrical Engineering Building, claimed the life of engineering student Andrew F. Boldt, 21, of West Bend, Wis. Another engineering student, Cody M. Cousins, 23, of Warsaw, Ind., was taken into custody immediately following the incident and faces a preliminary murder charge.

Cousins is scheduled to be arraigned at 2 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 23) in the Tippecanoe County Jail courtroom, according to the county prosecutor's office.

Classes, which were suspended on Tuesday (Jan. 21) and Wednesday (Jan. 22) in the wake of the shooting, will resume Thursday (Jan. 23).

Purdue Provost Tim Sands notified faculty that neither they nor their students would be responsible for any coursework that was scheduled to have taken place from the time of Tuesday's incident through the end of Wednesday's cancelled course sessions.

The main floor and upper levels of the Electrical Engineering Building were reopened Wednesday afternoon to faculty, staff and students wanting to return to offices, labs or classrooms. Representatives from building services, physical facilities and the dean of students' office were available to assist those returning, and police were on site to ensure people were able to enter and exit in an orderly fashion. Escorts also were available to assist those needing to retrieve items from areas of the building still closed.

Classrooms 065 and 067, where the shooting occurred, will be closed for at least the remainder of this academic year. All other classrooms and labs will be open for regular use beginning Thursday (Jan. 23). Students in the closed classrooms are being notified individually on where their classes and labs will meet, but any classes scheduled for those two rooms will not meet for the remainder of this week.

The university continues to offer counseling for students, faculty and staff.

Counseling is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through the Dean of Students Office, 207 Schleman Hall, phone 765-494-1747, and through Purdue Student Health Center's counseling and psychological services, 765-494-6995. The health center also has an after-hours number available from 5-8 p.m., 765-494-1724.

The Employee Assistance Program is available to see staff, faculty and students for counseling at the Center for Healthy Living, phone 765-494-0111.

Members of the University Religious Leaders organization on Wednesday (Jan. 22) were doing pastoral counseling at Cary Quadrangle.
