January 9, 2014

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue Extension will offer its 2014 Beef Management Seminar on Jan. 18 in Bedford for producers interested in learning more about how nutrition, genetics and environment influence meat quality.

The annual seminar, which will offer presentations by Extension and industry experts, will run from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Lawrence County 4-H Fairgrounds, 11265 U.S. 50 W., Bedford.

"The speakers have a wide range of expertise and can discuss reasons why our management practices might affect the outcome of meat quality," said Dave Redman, Purdue Extension educator in Lawrence County and one of the seminar's organizers. "Participants will be able to engage in a panel discussion after all of the topics have been presented."

Speakers are Warren Beeler, director of agriculture and policy and director of the Animal Marketing Division of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture; Troy Wistuba, ruminant technology manager for Prince Agri Products; Gregg Rentfrow, University of Kentucky Extension professor of meat science; and David Newsom, beef cattle specialist for Purina Animal Nutrition.

On or before Jan. 10, adult registration is $30 per person and student registration $25 for 4-H and FFA students or those under 18 who are registering with a parent. After Jan. 10, all registrations are $40. Fees include meals and snacks, as well as a take-home reference manual.

In addition to the seminar, Purdue Extension will host a free open house reception with local cattle supply exhibitors and seminar speakers 5-8 p.m. on Jan. 17, also at the Lawrence County 4-H fairgrounds. Seminar registration is not required to attend the open house.
