Workshop to offer essentials of wine evaluation, tasting room management

August 22, 2013

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A Purdue Extension workshop in September will present principles of grape growing, winemaking and wine marketing to help winemakers and employees better manage their tasting rooms.

Members of the Purdue Wine Grape Team will discuss commercial winemaking styles, wine judging and sensory evaluation, how to recognize and prevent wine defects, and the state of the Indiana wine industry. Participants also will take a tour of the Purdue Meigs experimental vineyards and observe the many varieties of grapes that can grow in the Midwest.

"This workshop is designed for tasting room staff and managers in the commercial wine industry, as well as people who are in the first stages of planning a tasting room," said Purdue Extension enology specialist Jill Blume. "We anticipate this will be a fun, knowledge-filled day."

While the workshop is aimed at wine industry employees, anyone is welcome to register, Blume said.

The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Purdue Meigs Horticulture Facility at 9101 S. County Road 100 East, about nine miles south of Lafayette.

Registration is $75 for the first person in a group and $25 for each additional person. The fee covers the workshop presentations, breakfast and lunch. The registration form can be downloaded from https://ag.purdue.edu/foodsci/extension/winegrapeteam/Lists/Calendar/Attachments/25/FallInvite13.pdf.

The workshop is limited to 50 participants, and advance registration with fee is required.

Casual dress is encouraged, and participants should bring a bottle of wine to share. Wine tasting is limited to participants 21 years and older.
