Purdue readies rollout of major campus initiatives

September 4, 2013

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue President Mitch Daniels is preparing to announce a series of initiatives at the university's West Lafayette campus designed to enhance student achievement and address some of the major questions facing higher education.

Daniels will report on Purdue's new agenda - designed to place Purdue among the world's leading academic institutions - at a University Senate meeting on Sept. 9 and a President's Forum on Sept. 12. The forum will be one of three during the fall semester to focus on Purdue's 10 next big moves. All will feature Daniels along with panelists who are leading the new initiatives.

"We in higher education are facing questions - and rightfully so - about the cost of college and what we deliver for the money," Daniels said. "This plan aims to address some of those questions while enhancing what Purdue has always done best: produce brilliant research and students who are well-rounded and ready to go into the world and make an impact where our nation needs it most."

All of the moves that will be rolled out fall into the following categories: science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) achievement; world-changing research; transformative education; and affordability and accessibility.

Daniels said the initiatives were developed over several months of work that involved deans, faculty and others at the university. The university's trustees also have reviewed and given support for the program.

"This plan presents an extraordinary opportunity for Purdue to set itself apart by decisively answering the tough questions and sending the message that we are serious about our students and our research," said Thomas Spurgeon, chair of the university's Board of Trustees. "When combined with the ongoing excellence across our campus, these new initiatives will place Purdue among the world's greatest academic institutions and serve as a source of pride for our alumni, students and supporters."
