Appointments, honors and activities

Appointments and promotions:

- David Bahr, currently director of the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Washington State University, has been named the head of the Purdue College of Engineering School of Materials Engineering. The appointment is effective Aug. 16. Bahr earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in materials engineering from Purdue in 1992 and 1993 and his doctorate in materials science from the University of Minnesota in 1997. While working on his doctorate, he spent time at Sandia National Laboratories. He joined the faculty at Washington State in 1997. Before becoming director of the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, he was campus-wide director of undergraduate research. In 2000, he received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers for his work with Sandia on Department of Energy stockpile stewardship.

- Michael Swain has been appointed director of Purdue University's College of Technology at Richmond. Swain joined the College of Technology at Richmond in 1996, overseeing admissions and student services. Prior to that, he worked at Ball State University and with Indiana State government, primarily with the Department of Correction and the Indiana Parole Board. He received a bachelor's degree in history from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and a master's degree in communication from Ball State.

Faculty and staff honors:

-Ahmed Sameh, the Samuel D. Conte Professor of Computer Science, received the International Association for Computational Mechanics Fellow Award 2012. The award was presented during the 10th World Congress on Computational Mechanics in São Paulo, Brazil on July 12. For more on Sameh, visit http://www.cs.purdue.edu/people/faculty/sameh/
