Ten 150th Anniversary Professors named by Provost’s Office

During January and early February, 10 faculty members were named 150th Anniversary Professors to recognize excellence in teaching and mentorship. Peter Hollenbeck, vice provost for faculty affairs, planned each announcement as a surprise presentation and was accompanied by Jay Akridge, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and diversity, and the dean of the faculty awardee. In many cases, department heads and faculty peers also participated.

“These outstanding faculty members are extraordinary educators, truly connecting with their students and inspiring them to achieve,” Akridge says. “They exemplify everything a great teacher and mentor should be.”

The faculty who received the distinction of 150th Anniversary Professor are:

* Erica Carlson, professor of physics and astronomy.

* David Eichinger, associate professor of science education.

* Christine Hrycyna, professor of biochemistry.

* Charles Krousgrill, professor of mechanical engineering.

* Suzanne Nielsen, professor of food science.

* William Oakes, professor of engineering education.

* David Rollock, professor of psychological sciences.

* Christian Oseto, professor of entomology.

* Randy Roberts, professor of history.

* Kathleen Salisbury, professor of small animal surgery.

“Honoring these faculty members who have dedicated their careers to exceptional teaching and mentoring is a real privilege,” Hollenbeck says. “Through these professorships, we are able to shine a light on the importance of their work and say thank you.”

The inaugural 150th Anniversary Professors were selected by a committee of 13 senior faculty who are distinguished and named professors, winners of the Charles B. Murphy Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching award and/or members of the Teaching Academy.

The 150th Anniversary Professorships coincide with the upcoming 150th anniversary of Purdue. Faculty who receive this distinction will each receive an annual discretionary allocation of $25,000 to support their teaching/scholarly program, funded by the Provost’s Office until donors are found to endow the named professorships.
