Applications sought for Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate program

The Graduate School’s Office of Graduate Diversity Initiatives (OGDI) is seeking talented underrepresented minority doctoral students to join its Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program. This program is designed to improve student success in graduate school and equip students with the resources necessary to successfully enter the professoriate.

“As of 2016, racial and ethnic minorities accounted for only 10 percent of tenured faculty nationwide, and that is something we are working to change," says Julius Eason, senior manager of OGDI. "That change starts with improving retention in graduate school and providing underrepresented minority graduate students with the resources they need to enter a career in academia. This program helps accomplish those goals."

The program offers a series of personal and professional development workshops, mentoring and outreach activities that provide students with the opportunity to foster academic and research collaborations, further enhancing underrepresented graduate student experiences and preparing them for the professoriate track.

Ali Camara, a Ph.D. candidate in biological sciences and AGEP scholar, reflected on his experience, saying, “AGEP is a reminder for students that they are not alone, there is support, and there are people who come from our same backgrounds with the same goals.”

OGDI is asking faculty members to encourage eligible graduate students to apply for this opportunity. Participants must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or DACA recipient who graduated from a U.S. high school. In addition, they must have passed their qualifying/preliminary exams while pursuing a doctoral degree. Doctoral candidates from historically underrepresented populations and diverse backgrounds include but are not limited to African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and Native Pacific Islanders.

The next AGEP program will take place from fall 2021 to summer 2022. Interested students can apply online through July 15. Questions about the program should be directed to Eason at eason2@purdue.edu.
