Butler Center, PPRI to hold first conversation on future of work, well-being on March 31

The Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence and Purdue Policy Research Institute are inviting faculty, staff and students to the "Courageous Conversations: Future of Work and Well-Being, Part 1" virtual discussion at noon-1:30 p.m. March 31.

The session is co-sponsored by the College of Agriculture, College of Education, Graduate School, College of Health and Human Sciences, Purdue Polytechnic Institute, and Purdue ADVANCE-Center for Faculty Success.

The topic stems from the organizers' belief that the two pandemics -- COVID-19 and racial injustices -- have exacerbated stress and anxieties related to work and well-being and the balance individuals are all striving to seek. This discussion session will involve gaining some knowledge and broadening participants' perspective on the topic as well as consider establishing trust to explore a deeper potential for moving forward.

Some questions for the speakers and attendees to consider: What is most pressing about well-being? How is work and the balance of life and work affecting you and/or others around you? What will the future be like if nothing changes? What do you see as your responsibility in this issue? What is the one thing we cannot fail to do about this issue to make things better for us?

The speakers for this session are:

  • Bedrich Benes, the George W. McNelly Professor of Technology, Department of Computer Graphics Technology and Department of Computer Science.
  • Ayse Ciftci, professor, Department of Educational Studies.
  • Alexander Francis, associate professor, Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, and chair, Senate Faculty Affairs Committee.
  • Karen Foli, associate professor, School of Nursing.
  • Jennifer Freeman Marshall, associate professor, Department of English.
  • Shelley MacDermid Wadsworth, Distinguished Professor, Department of Human Development and Family Studies.

Registration is required and should be completed online. For more information, contact butlercenter@purdue.edu.

The second part of "Courageous Conversations: Future of Work and Well-Being" will be at noon-1:30 p.m. April 7.
