Black Cultural Center offering virtual Juneteenth celebration

The Purdue University Black Cultural Center’s Juneteenth 2020 celebration is a virtual international showcase of creative talents in honor of black life. This year’s event will start at noon today (June 19) via the center’s Instagram page at @purdue_bcc.

Juneteenth is the annual commemoration of the ending of slavery in the U.S. Enslaved African Americans in Texas received the announcement that the Civil War had ended and they were free on June 19, 1865, two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.

This year’s virtual event will feature music by DJ Cleopatra, spoken word artists, traditional African drumming, visual arts and vocal selections.

The Black Cultural Center Library has developed a listing of resources and books for the campus community on Juneteenth and Black Lives Matter. Purdue Libraries and School of Information Studies has developed research guides of diversity, inclusion, racism and anti-racism resources.
